Social Action ~ T&V Together & Jewish Poverty Initiative
T&V Together is our community organizing initiative through which we get to know one another by way of one-to-one conversations, identify our struggles and try to make things better for everyone. We have had a shul-wide listening campaign, house meetings with dozens of participants and one of the largest congregational meetings ever. Currently we are undertaking a Senior Survey with the goal of identifying what our older members need, want and would like. T&V Together is a member of Manhattan Together, which coordinates region-wide organizing activities among faith-based community agencies. For more information or to get involved, please contact Elinor Nauen (Elinor@ElinorNauen.com) or Jackie Berkowitz (firstname.lastname@example.org).

The Town and Village Synagogue has a long-standing relationship with Engage partner organization Project ORE, which serves emergency kosher meals and provides counseling, case management, and other support services to isolated, poor, homeless, and mentally ill Jews. The synagogue didn’t have a direct connection to Engage, however, until Hesther Weisberger and several others from the community learned about the Engage Day of Service in Brooklyn this past March. At the event, Hesther introduced herself to Rabbi Brian Fink, director of Engage, who shared the work that the Engage Men’s Group is doing with Project ORE. One of the Men’s Group members, Herb Brickner, is also a Town and Village member. Since the Engage Day of Service, several synagogue members have joined the Engage community as well. As Hesther explained, “The partnership with Engage is a way to strengthen our efforts to help Project ORE.”
The power of the Engage Jewish Service Corps is unlimited! We can expand the concept of tzedakah in new ways. We can give respect, joy, and consideration to the Jewish elderly in need.
